O termo “scrapbook” vem de papéis coloridos brilhantes que eram chamados de “scrap” sendo originalmente os recheios dos primeiros álbuns. A arte de Scrapbook teve início há muitos séculos, através de diários, jornais e livros, na Alemanha passando então para Inglaterra. No século XVII havia um tipo de “álbum” chamado de Commonplace Books, onde as pessoas escreviam poemas e anotações; estes diários eram feitos à mão. Outro tipo interessante era o “álbum dos amigos”, nesse “álbum” havia pensamentos e recordações, sendo costume na época colecionar cabelos dos amigos como lembrança. Nos Estados Unidos, a arte do Scrapbook chegou há mais de cem anos, desenvolvendo-se principalmente na América do Norte, em regiões como Salt Lake City em Utah, onde se concentram muitas famílias da religião Mórmon.
Por volta de 1880 quando a primeira câmera foi inventada, as fotos de família foram aparecendo nos álbuns. Países como Inglaterra, Austrália, mas principalmente EUA, mostrou grande interesse pela arte.
Os materiais mais utilizados são: papéis acid free, cola acid free, adesivos 3D, fotos, canetas acid free, linhas, botões, ilhóses,tinta acrílica, ferramentas como furadores, cortadores de círculos, máquinas manuais e digitais de corte e papel e tecido, e tudo o que possa conferir mais beleza e harmonia, guardando assim o momento registrado nas fotos, sem o risco de desbotar,amarelar, manchar ou se descolar com o tempo.
